this valentine’s day origami is all the rage. folded paper hearts with whimsical poetry seem the “thing” for expressing your love & devotion. but i think the brits over at do the green thing, get it perfectly right with their simple Stay Grounded paper airplane project. no intensely convoluted manipulations of paper to [...]

i know, for vegetarians reading this, a “meat product glossary” conjures up the most wicked of imagery. but i commend sustainable table for putting out such a handy little gem. it will end forever your confusion over non-confined vs. free roaming.
print out this two-sided page & follow the folds–it’s pocket & [...]

my favorite green thing, hands down, has got to be tap water.
that’s right.  tap water.  it’s yummy, free and, if i bring my own bottle, green!
you probably think, whatever, nice tip. but i encourage you to also check out the movie flow.  it will make you appreciate the convenience and preciousness of your water faucet, [...]

obama has selected tom vilsack as his secretary of agricultural. hmmm….did obama even read the infamous 10 page michael pollan document? sadly, it seems he did not.
sign this petition if you care about food safety–and tell the new administration to live up to it’s campaign promise of CHANGE.
vilsack is a sad choice for america [...]

even before the financial meltdown that will define this generation, many of the nation’s poor were in a crisis–a food crisis. many NYers live in neighborhoods where fresh foods are not even an option. they are reduced to living out of cans bought at discount/drugstores–cans having traveled miles & packed with food suffering [...]

when i first landed in NYC i volunteered over at the housing works bookstore cafe.
it was super fun & i loved their social agenda–helping homeless NYers living with HIV & AIDS.
they’ve expanded their vision since then, expanding both their services & social enterprise. from the fancy pants thrift shop (think celebrity cast offs–gucci, marc [...]

the cooking class i took monday focused on dairy-free desserts, but the instructor also took some time to talk about the slavery of chocolate.
we don’t always think about the food supply & how stuff gets from the ground to our bodies, so i welcomed this idea that somewhere, someone was being forced into slavery [...]

if you’re looking for something interesting to do this weekend, check out MAS and their many walking tours.
working since 1893 to make this big crazy city more livable–true, that means something different to everyone–MAS comes at it from all angles–artistically, naturally, humanely.
you know them probably best, as all NYers do, for the tribute of light, [...]

the chill is here, i feel it. halloween approaches.
while i normally poo-poo this ghoulish holiday, i feel energized this year because there is so much fair trade chocolate out there–making treats good for the earth, the workers & my belly. and organizations like global exchange are keeping the cocoa industry honest by pushing the rights [...]
