deadly nightshade & other non-edible flowers

union square greenmarket brought me to tears today.
seriously, i guess i was feeling vulnerable (ok, hormonal) and something about the tease of fall, all of the happy people surrounded by the most amazing fresh foods & flowers–it did, it just got me. i remembered how incredibly lucky i am not just to live a mere 3 blocks from this fantastic offering of fresh, dynamic foods, but to live in a country that despite economic chaos has riches the majority of the world cannot imagine.
union square greenmarket–it keeps me humble & smiling.
ok, i was able to pick up some squash blossoms today. i have never had good luck with frying them, so i decided to bake them instead. i filled them with ricotta, agave & sliced almonds. then i coated them in half & half & rolled in graham cracker cookie crumbs. baked at 350 for about 17 minutes.
it was the cooking with flowers that got me to thinking about what you can/not use from the garden.
here is a good list to start with. i know summer is almost over–ok, it is slipping away from us–so you can start cramming for next year.
