Young Farmers are on the rise! The Greenhorns is a Hudson Valley based non profit working to promote, recruit and support young farmers. This celebrational + educational event will raise the funds we need to finish our documentary film’s roughcut for the Sundance Application deadline.

about the event:

The Greenhorns Block Party is a community gathering and fundraising event for the Greenhorns. This grass-roots nonprofit hosts young farmer mixers, pirate seed swaps, barn dances and crop mobs on a regular basis– all over the country. This one is particularly special.

On June 20, 2pm-10pm featuring:
+ The revival of 513 Henry Street’s antique Pharmacy in Brooklyn
+ a bike powered goat rotisserie, sandwiches, salads, beer, coffee
+ bike powered sound system.
+ live performance by MAYORAL CANDIDATE Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir.
+ surprise cameos
+ presentations and workshop by young urban and rooftop farmers.
+ live animal demonstrations and tabling

On the eve of the solstice we’ll spill out onto the sidewalk with haybales and tables, a community-scale potluck for progressive businesses and individuals to weave crowns of bittersweet with red thread, sew up a grocery bag, hob knob with advocacy groups, watch some films, buy some merchandise + plants + seeds, eat a sloppy sandwich, drink a coffee.
Severine von Tscharner Fleming, acclaimed activist and director of the Greenhorns, describes the event as “an easy, swing thru, summertime throwdown. With a surprising procession of cameo appearances, lovely collaborators and Awesome farm mayonnaise”

About the film:

The Greenhorns is a documentary film exploring America’s young farming community—its spirit, practices, and needs. As our nation experiences a groundswell of interest in sustainable lifestyles, the promising beginnings of an agricultural and cultural revival, young farmers’ efforts feed us safe food, conserve valuable land, and reconstitute communities split apart by strip malls. The Greenhorns film is the crown jewel of our advocacy work and we just need a little more money to finish it!
