petition: NYC compost project
my friend cal patch sent over this petition about the state of composting in NYC.
as you know, i am very excited about the LESEC’s compost collection at union square market days. and while that project continues to grow & gain momentum, some of our government sponsored programs are being kicked to the curb.
east new york farms is sponsoring the petition to highlight the need for continued support of the NYC Compost Project. up until last year, the project promoted the need for recycling our organic waste. remember the piles of the city’s fall leaves around the parks? roughly 20,000 tons of them (per year) were gathered up for the production of municipal compost. now the project is cancelled, which means all that rich, nutritious material is no longer given back to community gardeners, green-thumbed NYC residents or the Parks Department to revitalize our gardens & open spaces.
i encourage you to sign the petition. even if the city is unable to bring the project back, at least they know it is an issue we see as important. i also encourage you to rally your neighbors to possibly start a program of your own–get volunteers together and work with the city gardeners in your park
