ReCork america!

don’t toss out all those corks you’ll be going through from now until new year’s eve. recycle them instead.

no, i don’t mean refashioning them into a trivet, i mean recycle them thru the ReCORK America recycling program sponsored by amorim of portugal. amorim is the world’s largest producer (3 billion) of natural cork wine stoppers–that’s a lot of wine we’re drinking–in fact, 13 billion (yes, billion!) natural cork wine stoppers sold into the world market each year. for now, the majority of them end up in landfill instead of reuse applications such as: flooring tiles, building insulation, automotive gaskets, craft materials, soil conditioner & sports equipment.

the concept is simple: get your green party on, enjoy some wine (or champagne–granulated corks from champagne bottles are recyclable too) with family & friends, save the corks, send them to recork’s napa warehouse. they’ll find a reuse application for the corks as new products.

what kind of fun stuff do recycled wine corks find new life as? shoe soles, fishing rod handles, bulletin boards, place mats, flooring tiles, building insulation, gaskets, packaging materials, under playground equipment, & even as a soil amendment in compost.

thanks green by design for the heads up!

i knew i’ve been keeping those for a reason!

  2. Cork bottle stoppers are the main production of Amorim (the world leader in cork oak manufacturing and the people behind ReCORK America), yet any remaining materials from the stopper production process are incorporated into other high-value applications such as Wicanders flooring.

Wicanders cork oak floors represent a generations-old balance between environmental conservation, creation of wealth, and social development that benefits millions of people worldwide. Thanks a lot!
