LESGC: sweet things bake shop

Published on November 20th, 2008

i have long loved the lower eastside girls club.

i first got turned onto them at alt.cafe (now defunct) years ago. in a basket on the counter, i saw some yummy looking sugar cookies in a hand-tied cello bag. one cookie resembled the earth, the other was a white dove of peace. the sentiment was simple & sweet & i was smitten. right then i decided to seek out this cool bakery & support them by buying up all their sweet treats.

so how totally stoked was i to find out the bakery–sweet things bake shop–actually was part of an even larger progressive organization, the lower eastside girls club.

for those of you not-in-the-know, the LESGC helps young women (8-23) develop confidence as they learn fun ways they can make a difference in this big, crazy world. among their many programs, the one nearest–and sweetest–to my heart is the sweet things bake shop.

the bakery itself is full-service, and doubles as their 8 week “cookie academy”.  after-school, girls (13-18) learn the basics of running a small business–reconciling the cash register, taking orders/learning about inventory and of course, baking & decorating the cookies! younger ladies (9-12) can participate in the baking program that emphasizes team work thru baking basics.

this holiday season, the girls are baking up some sweet deals! the bake shop will be selling four holiday gift tins–including my special fave, the world peace dove. send them to everyone you know, as all proceeds benefit the LESGC directly. nothin’s sweeter than that!

consider using individual cookies for your party favors–they can do custom work–& have yummy organic fair-trade chocolate bars as well. for your wedding cake, maybe a tower of sweets is in order, as they make a mean cupcake.

and if you don’t have a sweet tooth you can still join the fun–consider volunteering with the girls thru the organizations mentoring & fundraising programs.
