daytrip: beacon, NY
photo: cool abandoned warehouse/turned public art space.
beacon, a short train ride north, is home to DIA:beacon–an offshoot of DIA arts foundation. i got my boyfriend & longtime friend, kitty dan, to head up there with me on a recon mission. i wanted to scope it out as a potential event site.
the grounds itself are quiet & lovely. the structure is a warehouse, open space with bright windows, looking out to the green. the bookstore absorbs the cafe, so the only real space is in the museum itself. although, they do tent for certain special events so this might be an option as well. there is a wonderful, tree lined landing to the right of the entrance that would be beautiful at night, with candles and uplighting. it would be an awesome space for an event or fundraiser–even a wedding, if you have the money.
need an excuse of your own to head up there? you should definitely check out beacon’s second saturday art walk happening on september 13, 2008.
need more sweet-talking? the {newnew} etsy* street team is gonna be there in force.
what is this newnew etsy street team?
a group of eclectic, tri-state artists supporting each other and joining together as the handmade cavalcade fair.
the handmade cavalcade fair will be located at the corner of main street– right in the middle of town across from the library.
metro north railroad’s hudson line has hourly trains that run between grand central and beacon.
From the metro north beacon station, it’s a 10 minute stroll to main street or you can take the beacon trolley which runs hourly loops from the train station to main street & the museum.
while you’re there, you must absolutely check out zora dora (main st west of north elm), yummy good popsicle treats made in-house with local fixins. awesome flavors like banana/pistachio/saffron, minted cantaloupe & vanilla beet will inspire you to try it at home. make sure to check out NYC’s own hometown crew for recipes and tried & true know-how.
